Graduate Summer Reading Course
The German Department's Summer Reading Course provides graduate students with the tools necessary for reading German-language academic texts in their respective fields of research. Primary and secondary reading materials are selected from a wide range of fields, including literature, theology, philosophy and art history. The course covers all of the grammatical structures normally covered in German 101 and German 102 over the course of two semesters as well as grammatical structures that frequently occur in academic texts, normally covered in German 105 and German 107. Students learn how to recognize grammatical forms, parse syntax, and use lexical aids (both on-line and paper) in order to write brief summaries and detailed translations of German texts in English. Students are also taught how to pronounce German words and read out loud, a necessary skill for accurate reading comprehension.
